2001--January 9
Senator Herbert Kohl:
Opposing John Ashcroft's confirmation as Attorney General

Dear Senator Herbert Kohl:

I am writing to urge you to reject Senator John Ashcroft’s confirmation as Attorney General.

Former Senator John Ashcroft’s rigid ideology and demonstrated commitment to reverse decades of social progress through legislation and the legal process make his proposed appointment as our nation’s chief law enforcer a prescription for disaster.

Throughout the 2000 election, candidate Bush promised to be a “uniter” for our country, not a “divider.” His nomination to Attorney General of defeated Senator John Ashcroft, one of the leading lights of the right wing conservative movement, exposes George W. Bush’s real obligations to the far right.

The office of the Attorney General is one of the most powerful in government. Perhaps most significant, the emphasis on enforcement of particular laws – including civil rights, abortion rights, consumer rights, and environmental rights – depends largely on the discretion of the Attorney General.

Senator Ashcroft’s extreme positions are well documented through his public voting record:

* Voters For Choice ranks him as 100 percent anti-choice on abortion and family planning issues (he even opposes abortion for victims of rape or incest).

* The Human Rights Campaign gives him a zero on gay and lesbian issues.

* The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights reports that Senator Ashcroft votes anti-civil rights 90 percent of the time; the NAACP ranks him anti-minority rights 80 percent of the time.

* The Consumer Federation of America gives him a zero.

* The National Education Association can count on his opposition to education programs 80 percent of the time.

* The League of Conservation Voters gives him a zero on the environment.

* The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence ranks him a zero on gun control issues (the National Rifle Association gives him an “A”).

* The AFL-CIO ranks him a zero when it comes to labor and workers’ rights issues.

* The National Organization for Women gives him a zero on women’s rights issues.

Everything is at stake. Putting a conservative activist like Senator Ashcroft in our nation’s chief law enforcement position is akin to letting the fox into the chicken coop.

The Constitution gives the Senate the responsibility of advising on and consenting to presidential appointments. As our elected officials, the Senate has a duty to fully review the writings, speeches, interviews, and voting records of nominees for Executive appointments. In light of the historically close nature of the presidential election, the Senate should be particularly careful in its review of nominees. President-elect Bush received no mandate for conservative activism.

Please oppose the confirmation of Senator Ashcroft as Attorney General. I urge you in the strongest terms possible to reject this dangerous nomination.

Sincerely,

Subject: Health Freedom - Codex Alimentarius - Petition

You have recently signed a petition for free access to food supplements at
the site of La Leva di Archimede (http://laleva.org) demanding that
legislators take into account the freedom of choice of consumers when
discussing supplement legislation.

This message is to confirm that your signature has been processed and added
to the list.

There is no need to respond to this message, except in case someone has
used your e-mail address without your consent to sign the petition. Please
let us know if this is the case.

============================================

Some additional information:

Codex Alimentarius is one of the international regulatory bodies that are
actively engaged in an effort to make regulations for vitamin and mineral
supplements and from discussions in the Codex Committee for Nutrition and
Foods for Special Dietary Uses, it appears that these Codex rules might
restrict both dosages of vitamins and minerals to low levels, as well as
restrict ingredients to a short list of pharmaceutically approved
substances.

Through the mechanism of trade sanctions, such Codex regulations may well
endanger your future access to food supplements within the
preventive/therapeutic range, that is today guaranteed under U.S. law.

International Advocates for Health Freedom (http://www.iahf.com) is asking
Congressman Dan Burton to hold Congressional oversight hearings on the U.S.
administration's participation in the Codex process. IAHF also has a
mailing list, with up to date information on Codex and what to do to help
preserve your freedom of choice. You can subscribe going to the IAHF
website at the above address.

Gary Null, the famous health writer and host of a popular syndicated radio
program in New York has joined forces with IAHF and they are now asking
U.S. consumers to sign a petition demanding congressional oversight
hearings be held.

You may find links to that petition at the site of Gary Null
(http://www.garynull.com)

or at the site of IAHF (http://www.iahf.com).

President-Select George W. Bush
Opposition to Educational Vouchers

Subject: Oppose Taxpayer Subsidies for Religious Schools!

As a citizen who is very concerned about the education of all of America's
children, I urge you to withdraw the voucher provision from your education
proposal you recently submitted to Congress.

I believe that vouchers represent an enormous gamble with our educational
system that is out of step with our nation's tradition of equal education
for all. While resources come out of public schools to support vouchers for
a few, the majority of students are left with fewer resources, teachers,
textbooks and facilities.

I am concerned that vouchers offer us nothing but false choices. Voucher
schemes, no matter what they are called, will siphon tax dollars from public
schools to private and religious schools. These programs offer only the
illusion of "choice" for the vast majority of public school students. At
best, they increase the opportunities of a handful of children who will be
carefully selected by private schools that have the luxury of deciding whom
they want to admit while funneling much-needed funds away from public
schools.

Vouchers will not only gamble with children's education but they will also
finance discrimination. Unlike public schools, religious and private schools
are allowed to pick and choose which students they admit. Further, religious
schools are not required to comply with many federal civil rights laws and
can exclude a student based on their religion, gender or learning or
physical disabilities. Such students are highly unlikely to be accepted by
these schools.

Finally, I strongly ask you not to breach the wall separating church and
state. I should not be forced to support religious beliefs and practices
with which I may strongly disagree. This is exactly what will occur under
school voucher schemes. Religious schools represent 85 percent of the total
private school enrollment in the United States. These schools properly serve
as arms of religious ministries and incorporate religious values and
doctrine throughout their curriculum and should not be funded by taxpayer
dollars.

Once again, Mr. President, I urge you to withdraw the voucher provisions
from your education proposal. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on
this important matter.

Sincerely,

(I used my legal name & address, of course)

Representative James F. Sensenbrenner, Jr.
Subject: Protect Religious Liberty: Oppose Faith-Based Initiative!

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose President Bush's faith-based
initiative. I am concerned that this proposal could transform the helping
hand of government into a chokehold of discrimination, or it could initiate
an unprecedented government regulation of churches and other houses of
worship.

It is my understanding that the Bush initiative would allow for
taxpayer-funded discrimination. Because religious organizations are exempt
from many civil rights laws, they are allowed to discriminate on the basis
of their religious beliefs and teachings about race, religion, sexual
orientation, gender and pregnancy status. I've read that under this
initiative, for example, a Catholic church receiving public funds for
literacy programs could fire a teacher for getting pregnant outside of
marriage or an Orthodox Jewish synagogue that operated a food bank could
refuse to hire non-Jews or women.

I'm alarmed that there would also be no restrictions on how religious
organizations incorporate their beliefs in the delivery of social services.
These groups would be allowed to decide who gets priority for services and
what services are actually provided. The lack of protections could lead to
discrimination against those who most need help.

Another reason for my concern is that this proposal would not require
religious organizations to hire trained and licensed counselors and
therapists to deliver social services. In Texas, where then-Governor Bush
implemented many elements of his new federal program, a church-based drug
rehabilitation program argued that drug addiction was a sin, not a disease,
and offered prayer and Bible reading as "treatment." Priests, ministers and
rabbis are the best people to offer spiritual guidance, but many individuals
faced with drug addiction, mental illness and other problems need more than
spiritual advice.

This initiative would devastate America's proud history of religious
autonomy. The Bush proposal would subject religious organizations to
government oversight and regulation in exchange for public funds. Doing so
would inevitably lead toward increased governmental interference in the
affairs of houses of worship and inevitably lead to pitting majority
religions against smaller religious denominations as they fight for scarce
government dollars.

Again, I urge you to oppose President Bush's faith-based initiative. I look
forward to hearing your thoughts regarding this important issue.

Sincerely,

Subject: Don't Play Politics with Mifepristone and Women's Lives

Dear Secretary Tommy Thompson

Please do not play politics with mifepristone and women's lives. Science has
spoken. As the FDA concluded after an extensive review, mifepristone is a safe,
effective method of early abortion in the embryonic stage of pregnancy.

Rather than trying to put in place roadblocks to mifepristone's availability, I
urge you to move forward research on the promising non-abortion indications of
mifepristone such as uterine fibroid tumors, ovarian cancer, meningiomas, and
endometriosis. The advancement of medical research for women's health care is
an issue that unites, rather than divides America.

Representative James F. Sensenbrenner, Jr.
Subject: Oppose Congress's Attempt to Restrict Access To Mifepristone (RU-486)

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose S. 251 /H.R. 482, bills that would
impose severe and unwarranted restrictions on the use of Mifepristone, also
known as RU-486.

Anti-choice politicians must not be allowed to block beneficial medical
developments for women. Mifepristone represents an important new
reproductive health care option for American women. Yet the same anti-choice
forces who have spent the past six years chipping away at a woman's right to
choose should not be allowed to rob women of this significant medical
advancement.

Mifepristone promises to give women, especially those who live far from an
abortion provider, better access to a safe, private, and early option for
ending a pregnancy. Additionally, researchers have identified many potential
uses for mifepristone beyond pregnancy termination, including the treatment
of breast cancer, endometriosis, glaucoma, meningioma, ovarian cancer,
prostate cancer and other conditions.

Further restriction is not medically necessary. In the last decade, more
than half a million women in Europe have safely used mifepristone, as have
thousands of American women in clinical trials. In 1996, the FDA declared
the drug safe and effective for use as an early method of abortion. The FDA
imposed some restrictions on the drug in its final approval, any further
restriction by Congress is unwarranted and unnecessary.

Congress must not substitute its views for the judgments of medical experts
at the FDA. The FDA is an expert body charged with ensuring the integrity of
the drug approval process and the safety of drugs available to the American
public. The FDA has made clear that the approval of mifepristone resulted
from its careful evaluation of the medical evidence under strict scientific
protocols. It is inappropriate for Congress to second-guess the considered
judgments of medical experts.

Again, I urge you to oppose S. 251 /H.R. 482 and support access to RU-486. I
look forward to your thoughts on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Subject: Tibetan Antelope a Priority

Dear Mr. Marshall Jones ,

I am writing to urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to propose listing
the Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii ) as an "endangered" species
under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) at the earliest opportunity.

On October 7, the USFWS missed its statutory deadline to respond to a joint
petition submitted by the Tibetan Plateau Project and the Wildlife
Conservation Society to designate the Tibetan antelope as "endangered."

This failure may further imperil the species, particularly during the
winter hunting season when poachers are most active.

Populations of Tibetan antelope are dwindling principally because the
species is poached for "shahtoosh," its valuable wool. The U.S. needs to
send a firm message to chiru poachers and smugglers that the shahtoosh
trade will not be tolerated here. In addition, the USFWS can assist the
chiru conservation efforts of China and India by proposing the species as
"endangered."

The Tibetan antelope population is already as low as 65,000-72,500, and
with a mortality rate of 20,000 annually, the chiru could potentially be
extinct in less than five years.

The Tibetan antelope continues to be threatened by inadequate regulation
and law enforcement, as demonstrated by ongoing poaching arrests this year
in China and shahtoosh seizures in India. In addition, the U.S. fashion
industry has contributed to the promotion of shahtoosh, fueling American
demand for this contraband product. The status of the Tibetan antelope
meets all of the criteria under the Endangered Species Act required for an
"endangered" listing throughout its range in China and India.

No other US law can confer a degree of protection for the Tibetan antelope
similar to the ESA, making an "endangered" listing essential to halting the
shahtoosh trade in the U.S. and protecting the chiru in the Tibetan Plateau
region. I urge you to propose the Tibetan antelope for an "endangered" listing at the earliest opportunity.

Sincerely,

Subject: 107th Congress crucial for Tibet

Dear Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner,

Congratulations on your recent campaign victory. As your constituent, I
strongly urge that you take a stand for Tibet by supporting Tibetan policy
initiatives in the 107th Congress. Please also support the speedy
appointment of a new Special Coordinator for Tibet to replace Julia Taft
who retired in early January.

For more than 50 years, the people of Tibet have been denied fundamental
human rights under often-brutal conditions of the Chinese occupation of
their homeland. Congressional support for the Tibetan people is a critical
component for securing a peaceful solution to the crisis in Tibet. For
this reason, it is also crucial for the Administration to appoint a strong
candidate for the position of Special Coordinator for Tibet in the State
Department.

Help the Tibetan people regain control of their future.

Thank you for your support.

Subject: Increase Funding for Researching Mifepristones Possible Uses

This message was sent to:

Dear Acting Director:

I urge the National Institutes of Health to dramatically increase funding for
clinical trails on mifepristone’s many possible uses and to expand
anti-progestin research overall. I understand that mifepristone shows promise
as a treatment for meningiomas, fibroid tumors, endometriosis, ovarian cancer,
and a myriad of other diseases and conditions that particularly affect women.

Since anti-abortion politics has cost precious years of mifepristone research,
I must urge NIH and other scientific research institutions to help make up this
lost ground.

Subject: Oppose Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan

Dear President George W. Bush

I am writing to urge you to make the rights of Afghan women and girls paramount
in US foreign policy. The Taliban, a fundamentalist militia group which
controls 90 percent of Afghanistan, has prohibited women from working outside
of the home and barred women and girls from going to school, and are not
allowed to leave their homes without a close male relative and without wearing
the burqa which allows them only a small mesh patch through which to see.

In addition, a severe drought, the Taliban’s recent military incursions, and
Pakistan’s decision to close their borders with Afghanistan have all
contributed to a devastating humanitarian crisis, leaving hundreds of thousands
of refugees and displaced persons with virtually no food or shelter in
Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Support for ending gender apartheid in Afghanistan has been bi-partisan.
Resolutions calling for the restoration of the rights of women and girls in
Afghanistan have passed in both the Senate and the House with strong
bi-partisan support and leadership.

As a person deeply concerned with women’s human rights, I ask that you:

Oppose U.S. and U.N. recognition of the Taliban until the rights of women

Subject: Protect Arctic Wildlife Refuge from Oil Drilling

Dear Senator Herbert Kohl:

The 1.6 million-acre coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is the United States' premier birthing and nursing ground for arctic wildlife including grizzly and polar bears, musk oxen, the arctic fox, wolves and wolverines, 135 bird species, and a migrating herd of 180,000 caribou which supports thousands of native people still living in harmony with this rugged land.

Oil drilling in this pristine refuge promises potentially devastating consequences for the region's fragile habitat, native communities and unparalleled wildlife.

Senator Frank Murkowski, sponsor of S.389, a sweeping energy bill which would allow oil and gas development in this Arctic refuge, asserts that drilling can be conducted without harming wildlife and the environment. Such claims don’t hold up, however. For instance:

-- An average of 409 spills have occurred annually on Alaska’s North Slope since 1996, while operations produce tons of nitrogen oxides, which cause smog and acid rain, and large amounts of sewage, garbage and scrap metal. The drilling sites in the Arctic Refuge would be strewn throughout the delicate coastal plain, linked by pipelines and roads. This is not clean, unobtrusive drilling.

-- The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the oil that could be extracted would fuel the U.S. market for less than six months. Consider that increasing fuel efficiency standards for new vehicles to an average of 39 miles per gallon over the next decade would save 51 billion barrels of oil over the next 50 years -- more than 15 times the likely yield from the Arctic Refuge! This is not realistic energy for the future.

-- The oil market is global, and oil from the Arctic Refuge would expand global oil reserves by just 0.3 percent -- a quantity far too inconsequential to affect prices at the pump or elsewhere. This plan will not lower gas prices.

-- Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would have no impact on California's electricity problems or any other state's electricity problems. Most U.S. electric power plants do not use oil. Less than 1 percent of California's electricity is generated by burning oil, and the average for the United States as a whole is only 3 percent. Besides, no oil from the Refuge would flow to refineries for at least a decade. This is not a solution for the California power crisis.

Despite all this, Senator Murkowski, President Bush and oil industry executives continue to push for oil development in this fragile corner of the Arctic.

This policy will ravage one of the last truly wild landscapes in the United States. Please respect our children’s and grandchildren’s environmental heritage and keep the drilling rigs out of the Arctic.

Subject: End Use of Human Antibiotics in Livestock Feed

Dear Dr. Henney,

I am writing in support of Petition 99P-0485 to urge you to ban medically useful antibiotics from livestock feed.

For decades, livestock producers have fed human antibiotics to hogs, cows and poultry to speed their growth or counteract the effects of crowded living conditions and poor hygiene. In fact, about one third of the antibiotics manufactured in the United States each year ends up in animal feed. Mounting evidence has proven that the overuse of antibiotics for livestock makes the drugs less effective for humans.

Scientists, health organizations and governments around the world are urging that antibiotics not be squandered on fattening livestock. The World Health Organization recommended that antibiotics used to treat humans not be used to promote animal growth. The GAO reported that "research has linked three diseases with antibiotic-resistant strains affecting humans to the use of antibiotics in animals;" and the European Union has already banned human antibiotics in animal feed.

I urge you not to allow an antibiotic to be used in livestock feed if that antibiotic is used in human medicine. Please tell me how you plan to address this looming health crisis.

Subject: Tell Ford to Offer Environment-friendly Cars

Dear Mr. Ford,

I am writing to you to urge Ford Motors to develop and sell an electric-gasoline hybrid sedan that averages at least 50 miles per gallon within the next year. American manufacturers, who fell dangerously behind Japanese auto companies once before, are once again tardy in meeting today’s environmental challenges. Toyota and Honda have begun selling hybrid vehicles to the American public, and others are sure to follow.

In contrast, American manufacturers, including Ford, have led the way in producing dangerous, fuel guzzling sport utility vehicles. While I applaud Ford’s recent willingness to admit the external effects of its leading source of profits, it is almost a parody of social responsibility for you to make your first effort in the hybrid field yet another SUV!

This is a critical moment for the auto industry, which has successfully lobbied Congress for years to avoid increasing fuel efficiency requirements. As a result the American people are facing soaring gasoline prices. As one of the leaders of the world auto industry, you have a personal responsibility to ensure that environmental leadership does not fall to foreign auto makers and that American consumers do not pay higher gasoline prices because of Ford’s addiction to the profitability of SUVs.

Your great-grandfather transformed the American economy by producing vehicles that were affordable to the average worker. You can help accomplish a similar transformation by producing an environmentally sound vehicle available to everyone. That can only be a sedan.

Please rest assured that demand will be there if you act in a responsible way. I look forward to hearing that you have committed Ford to an early development and release of an advanced electric-gasoline hybrid sedan.

Subject: Ban Special Interest Money in Elections

Dear Senator Herbert Kohl:

During the past federal election, more than $450 million was raised and spent in unregulated, unlimited political contributions. This so-called "soft money" was donated to political parties from corporations, unions and individuals with special interests.

Democrats and Republicans agree that the current campaign finance system is a scandal and Senator Trent Lott has agreed to allow debate to begin during the last two weeks of March.

Last October, 55 senators - five short of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster - voted for at least one of two versions of campaign finance reform. In both 1998 and 1999, the House passed a ban on soft money. Campaign finance reform is within reach, but it will require a commitment to change and to election integrity from leaders such as you.

Please add your support to the McCain-Feingold bill. I am counting on you to ban the soft money loophole without compromising by raising the limits on contributions to candidates and political action committees.

Reductions in the availability of contraception will not only result in increased maternal deaths and illegal abortions worldwide, but will also likely increase the spread of HIV/AIDS in developing countries. This isn't compassionate -- it's callous disregard for women's lives and health.

Studies have documented that comprehensive international family planning, including access to abortion, leads to healthier women and children throughout the world. Developing countries depend on U.S. financial aid to supplement scarce local resources for this purpose.

Policies that deny to women and service providers abroad the free speech and reproductive rights that are enjoyed in the U.S. justifiably make this country look like an international bully.

Subject: Morningstar Farms(TM)

Worthington Foods, Inc. is dedicated to serving and satisfying our
consumers and would like to summarize two recent issues regarding
ingredients in our Morningstar Farms(TM) products. We also want to assure
our consumers that we are taking all steps necessary to resolve these
issues as soon as possible.

First, in regard to a report by Greenpeace of StarLink corn found in
Morningstar Farms(TM) meat-free Corn Dogs, we want to reassure our
consumers that our highest priority is the safety of our products, and
that Worthington Foods uses high quality ingredients. We have notified
the Food and Drug Administration of an allegation that a third party
testing lab found StarLink corn in Morningstar Farms(TM) meat free Corn
Dogs product with the code 10040NPB and we are sending the product to an
independent lab for testing. In the event that our laboratory test
results are positive for StarLink, Worthington will certainly comply with
the FDA regulations. It is very important to us that our consumers have
complete confidence in the quality of all Morningstar Farms(TM) products.

Although StarLink corn has not been approved for food, America's leading
allergists, the scientific community, EPA and USDA officials have all
repeatedly stated that StarLink corn represents no immediate health
concern.

Second, we recently became aware of an error in the supply of one soy
ingredient used in Worthington Foods products.

Before being acquired by Kellogg Company, Worthington had decided to
examine the possibility of using non-biotech ingredient sources,
recognizing that consumers of these products might prefer this option.
While we have been specifying non-biotech soy protein to our suppliers for
some time, we recently discovered that some biotech soy protein had been
used in our products. Our supplier has corrected this error and our
quality control procedures will help ensure that we receive soy protein
which is not biotech.

We want to reassure our consumers that we are taking all appropriate
actions to correct this error regarding soy protein. While this is not a
labeling issue, Worthington Foods has never claimed that our products were
biotech-free. We have every intention of continuing to produce our
products with non-biotech soy protein and we continue to pursue supplier
options for other non-biotech ingredients.

We apologize to our loyal consumers for this error. It was not our intent
to misinform anyone on this issue.

Subject: Re: Please clean up Bayer!

Dear *****r,

Thank you for your e-mail. We respect your concern for our environment and we
too hold the view that the future of our planet depends on our collective
conduct. We appreciate the opportunity to share our thoughts with you on this
issue.

Bayer is an international chemicals-pharmaceuticals company founded 138 years
ago in Germany. Today the company is represented in nearly every country in the
world, and in Brazil we look back on a 100-year history.

Bayer has spent more than 13 billion euro worldwide during the last ten years
for environmental protection, for the construction as well as the operation and
maintenance of environmental protection facilities. These expenditures have also
helped to develop new technologies, to reduce the production of waste materials,
or to contain them within closed production cycles.

For Bayer, comprehensive environmental protection, maximum safety, high product
quality and optimum commercial efficiency are factors of equal importance for
achieving our corporate objectives. Bayer´s committment to comprehensive
environmental protection applies in Brazil no differently than it does at other
locations.

We treat or deposit our waste materials in our own facilities and, on the basis
of available free capacity, we offer other companies the opportunity to use our
facilities.

Bayer S.A. operates its own comprehensive waste treatment complex comprising a
biological wastewater treatment plant, a residue incinerator and a controlled
landfill site, as well as a laboratory for eco-toxicological examination. The
facilities operate according to international standards.

In contrast to the claims made by Greenpeace, Bayer´s incineration plant in
Brazil employs the same technology used to incinerate PCBs in industrial nations
such as Germany, France and Great Britain

Emission levels from the incineration plant are well within the limits set by
the authorities. The disposal facility has a multi-layered floor insulation: a
polyethylene foil on top of a 60 cm thick clay insulation.

Several days ago 20 Greenpeace activists forced their way into the Bayer plant
at Belford Roxo to protest against alleged pollution. Bayer discussed the
document presented by Greenpeace with three of the organization´s
representatives.

The information we have at hand shows that the Greenpeace data do not comply
with scientific standards and thus needs to be questioned. Nonetheless, Bayer
will have the results examined by an independent institute.

In its report, Greenpeace assigns products to the Bayer plant in Belford Roxo,
the insecticide DDT for example, which have never been produced, utilized or
stored there. The environmental authority FEEMA examines drainage and ground
water and has never found these substances.

Waste water from the incineration plant is diverted to a purification plant. It
is examined regularly by an external institution, most recently in December
2000, by the company "Analytical Solutions". The levels assessed were well below
the limits set by law. This is also the case for polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs), which have been banned for several years. However, the incineration of
residuals is necessary and is allowed by the authorities. Bayer is one of the
few companies which has the necessary incineration technology. For this reason,
Bayer assists other companies in the disposal of PCB residuals such as cooling
fluid used in older transformers.

When it comes to heavy metals, Bayer also complies with relevant legislation.

Therefore we hold the Greenpeace accusations to be unjustified.

Thank you for letting us present our point of view with this letter. Please
don´t hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Corporate Communication Bayer Brasil

Subject: Protect Religious Liberty: Oppose Faith-Based Initiative!

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose legislation to be introduced by
Rep. J.C. Watts (R-OK) that would implement President Bush's faith-based
initiative. I am concerned that this proposal could transform the helping
hand of government into a chokehold of discrimination and initiate
unprecedented government regulation of churches and other houses of worship.

This initiative would allow for taxpayer-funded discrimination. Religion is
a very personal belief that varies from individual to individual. We need
to protect each person's religious freedom, including the freedom to receive
services without being forced to listen to another's religious beliefs.
Under the Bush proposal, there would be no restrictions on how religious
organizations incorporate their beliefs into the delivery of social
services.

The Watts legislation includes provisions that sharply attack one of the
oldest civil rights principles-that tax dollars will not fund
discrimination. Under this initiative, for example, a Catholic church
receiving public funds for literacy programs could fire a teacher for
getting pregnant outside of marriage or an Orthodox Jewish synagogue that
operated a food bank could refuse to hire non-Jews or women.

Government should not get into the business of religion. This proposal
would expose religious institutions to invasive government regulation,
including compliance reviews and audits. We must not put government in the
position of regulating religion.

Lifting government rules and guidelines for religious organizations to
receive federal funds will lead to more harm than good. In Texas, where
then-Governor Bush implemented many elements of his faith-based proposals, a
church-based drug rehabilitation program argued that drug addiction was a
sin, not a disease, and offered prayer and Bible reading as "treatment." We
should not remove federal rules and licensing requirements for religious
programs administering professional social services. The federal government
should not fund unqualified groups to administer to those in need

Again, I urge you to oppose legislation to be introduced by Rep. J.C. Watts
(R-OK) that would implement President Bush's faith-based initiative.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding this important issue.

Sincerely,

Subject: Protect Religious Liberty

As a citizen who shares your concern about helping those in need, I urge you
to halt your new initiative to give tax dollars to pervasively religious
organizations until we can guarantee that no one will be discriminated
against as a result of your program.

The sweeping changes you propose in the way religious organizations can use
taxpayer money to provide social services could in fact create
government-funded discrimination in employment and services, as well as
result in a dangerous loosening of licensing and standards for providers of
social services.

I am concerned that your faith-based initiative would allow for
taxpayer-funded discrimination.

I am alarmed that there would also be no restrictions on how religious
organizations incorporate their beliefs in the delivery of social services.
These groups would be allowed to decide who gets priority for services and
what services are actually provided. The lack of protections could lead to
discrimination against those who most need help. A Baptist church that is
running a local housing program could, for example, give preference to
low-income people in their own congregation.

I have also read that this proposal would not require religious
organizations to hire trained and licensed counselors and therapists to
deliver social services. In Texas, when you implemented many elements of
the program you now seek to expand, a church-based drug rehabilitation
program argued that drug addiction was a sin, not a disease, and offered
prayer and Bible reading as "treatment." I understand your position that
priests, ministers, rabbis and others may be the best people to offer
spiritual guidance, but I strongly believe many individuals faced with drug
addiction, mental illness and other problems need more than spiritual
advice.

Again, Mr. President, I urge you to halt your new initiative to give tax
dollars to religious organizations until questions of potential
discrimination are resolved. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on
this important matter.

Subject: Legislation Addresses Racial Profiling

As your constituent, I urge you to support the "Traffic Stops Statistics
Study Act" in the 107th Congress. This bill would offer police departments
financial incentives to collect data to determine the extent racial
profiling is used as a basis for traffic stops.

The problem of racially targeted traffic stops is serious and often ignored.
One study, for example, found that 73 percent of the people stopped by the
police on a strip of interstate highway in Maryland were African-Americans
even though they only made up 14 percent of those traveling on that road.
African American business leaders, actors, athletes and even your fellow
Members of Congress have been stopped for no other reason than their race.

This proposed legislation would offer police departments financial
incentives to keep detailed records of traffic stops, including the age,
race and ethnicity of the people stopped, the nature of the traffic
violation and whether the vehicle was searched. The Justice Department would
then be charged with collecting the information and determining the scope of
the problem nationwide.

Collection of this information is vital to understanding the pervasiveness
of this humiliating and discriminatory practice. I strongly encourage you to
show leadership on this issue by supporting and co-sponsoring this important
legislation. I look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding this issue.

Subject: Ban Special Interest Money in Elections

Dear Senator Herbert Kohl:

The McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform legislation is our best opportunity to reduce the pernicious influence of money in politics. As you debate it and vote on it in the coming days, I hope you will add your voice to that of millions of citizens across the country in demanding a ban on soft money and the staggering power of wealthy special interests on government.

During the past federal election, more than $450 million was raised and spent in unregulated, unlimited political contributions. This so-called ''soft money'' was donated to political parties from corporations, unions and individuals with special interests.

I am counting on you to ban the soft money loophole, oppose the so-called ''paycheck'' protection provision, and to refuse any increases on hard money contributions to candidates and political action committees.

Subject: Oppose Bush's Attack on Endangered Species

Dear Senator Herbert Kohl:

As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to resist all Bush's attempts to weaken the Endangered Species Act and leave our nation's most vulnerable wildlife unprotected.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA), passed by Congress in 1973, is the last line of defense for species whose numbers have dwindled perilously low, most likely as a result of humans encroaching on their natural habitat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has primary responsibility for administering the act and evaluates candidate species for placement on the endangered or threatened ''list'' and subsequently develops recovery plans for those selected. However, due to chronic under funding, the listing process is painfully slow.

By their very definition, endangered species don't have the luxury of time and so citizens and environmental groups have turned to the courts to compel the USFWS to enforce the ESA and grant protection to plants and animals in danger of dying out. In fact, the majority of the 1,244 species of plants and animals currently on the list were granted protection because of legal pressure.

In addition to slashing the endangered species budget by $9.1 million, the Bush plan would eliminate all federal funding to enforce court orders, effectively allowing the government to ignore citizen suits filed under the Endangered Species Act. Instead, sole discretion for listing new species would be conferred upon Interior Secretary Gale Norton, giving her the power of life or death. Norton is no friend to the environment and has even questioned the constitutionality of the ESA.

Please block Bush's attack on imperiled plants and animals by adequately funding endangered species programs and allowing citizens continued access to the courts in order to compel federal agencies to enforce the Endangered Species Act.

Sincerely,

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

I am dismayed at Redbook's recent decision to censor the National Abortion
Federation’s public education advertisement, thereby denying
American women access to information about the FDA approved "Early Option"
abortion pill. Such censorship does not "satisfy regional mores;" the
majority of American women in every region are pro-choice. Since millions
of American women (43% of childbearing women) will obtain an abortion in
their lifetime, it seems particularly "appropriate for your reader[s]" to

Subject: Protect Religious Liberty: Oppose President Bush's Faith-Based Initiative

Thank you for using American Civil Liberties Union Mail System

Message sent to the following recipients:
Representative Sensenbrenner

[recipient address was inserted here]

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose H.R. 7, the “Community
Solutions Act.” If passed, this legislation would implement the most
dangerous aspects of President Bush’s faith-based initiative by
fundamentally changing the way religious organizations can use taxpayer
money to provide social services.

H.R. 7 provides no new funds for social services programs. The President
has repeatedly stated that his faith-based initiative would provide new
money for social service programs as well as tax incentives to encourage
charitable giving. This legislation provides no new money and only makes
it easier for religious groups to proselytize and discriminate with tax
dollars.

The Bush initiative would allow for taxpayer-funded discrimination.
Religion is a very personal belief that varies from individual to
individual. We need to protect each person’s religious freedom,
including the freedom to receive services without being forced to listen
to another’s religious beliefs. Under the Bush proposal, there would
be no restrictions on how religious organizations incorporate their
beliefs into the delivery of social services. Further, religious
organizations would be allowed to be discriminate against applicants for
jobs with federally funded on the basis of religion, marital status,
sexual orientation, gender, HIV status, or any other characteristic that a
religious organization find objectionable.

Government should not get into the business of religion. This proposal
would expose religious institutions to invasive government regulation,
including compliance reviews and audits. We must not put government in the
position of regulating religion.

Finally, H.R 7 would fund proselytization. This legislation includes a
provision that allows Cabinet Secretaries to convert any existing social
service program into a voucher program. As a result, the voucher
provision removes the legal barriers that now stop religious organizations
from proselytizing beneficiaries.

Again, I urge you to oppose H.R. 7, the “Community Solutions
Act.” We must not allow our fundamental freedoms to be jeopardized.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this important matter.

Sincerely,

To: Representative James Sensenbrenner
Subject: Energy Bill: Promote Auto Fuel Efficiency

Dear Representative Sensenbrenner:

I urge you to vote against the energy bill. As written, this bill does not secure our nation's energy future and represents the interests of select industries at the expense of the environment and public health. Many sections of this bill are objectionable. For example, it allows drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and makes it easier to drill in many other locations. It also heavily subsidizes traditional, polluting energy industries, such as coal and oil, with taxpayer money. The bill even weakens a potentially good provision, a tax credit for cleaner cars, so much that it favors inefficient vehicles that pollute more than most.

Please support an amendment, sponsored by Rep. Edward Markey (MA) and Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (NY), which phases out the fuel economy loophole for light-duty trucks by placing all light-duty vehicles under a uniform CAFE standard of 27.5 mile-per-gallon, the current standard for passenger cars. Increasing fuel economy and promoting fuel-efficient vehicles would save enough oil to eliminate the need to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and would reduce emissions of global warming gases from the automotive sector.

Also, please seek to amend the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit to restore the original language of the CLEAR ACT, reversing changes made in the Ways and Means Committee that unfairly favor gas guzzling vehicles and strip air quality protections.

Please vote against the energy bill as it is now written. I encourage you to support amendments that represent real progress conserving energy and reducing pollution, such as the Markey and Boehlert amendment that would close the SUV loophole.

Message text follows:

August 16, 2001

[recipient address was inserted here]

[recipient name was inserted here],

I urge you to reconsider giving Rush Limbaugh a program on your
news channel.

CNN does not need to sink to the level of the FOX News Channel to win
viewers. There is still a place for responsible journalism on TV and Rush
Limbaugh is neither responsible nor a journalist. Countless articles and
books have discounted many of his supposedly "factual" statements and, as
you can see by the quotes below, Limbaugh is vicious and bigoted.

The failures of Dr. Laura Schlesinger's recent TV show and Rush's own
syndicated TV show point to the shaky transition of rabid right-wing
rhetoric from radio to television. If CNN is looking for a well-known
personality to host a political show, you might consider the National
Organization for Women's immediate-past president Patricia Ireland, or any
number of people with insightful comments on the issues important to YOUR
viewers.

Here are just a few of his outrageous statements:

"A feminazi is a woman to whom the most important thing in life is seeing
to it that as many abortions as possible are performed."

"What if a man claimed the right to rape, using the same principle found
in the theory that it is his body and he has the right to choose?"

"The poor in this country are the biggest piglets at the mother pig and
her nipples. The poor feed off the largess of this government and they
give nothing back. Nothing."

"The Native Americans were meaner to themselves than anybody else was ever
mean to them. The people were savages."

"There is only one way to eliminate nuclear weapons. Use them."

As you can see from these Limbaugh gems, CNN's image will forever be
tarnished by giving someone of his ilk an even bigger microphone. I ask
you to consider these concerns carefully.

On 20 January 2001, by coincidence the same day as George W. Bush's inauguration as President of the United States, the world's leading climate scientists approved the most comprehensive study ever done on global warming. They concluded that "there is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities."

If global warming continues, the result is likely to be devastating, with more unpredictable weather, extreme floods and droughts, severe forest and coral reef decline, sea level rise, the melting of the Arctic perennial sea ice and mountain glaciers around the world, and spreading disease.

A failure by United States to meet its Kyoto commitments would have significant economic consequences. The cost of meeting US commitments has been grossly exaggerated by many US analysts. In reality, the real issue is that the US will suffer outside the growing international environmental framework. New international trade regimes will inevitably include greenhouse gas reductions and so the US will gradually become economically and politically isolated from the rest of the world. Public pressure on US corporations will grow, and especially on US oil companies, as recent consumer pressure campaigns against US oil companies and several Greenpeace oil rig and oil tanker actions already show.

The European Union has now decided that it will ratify and implement the Kyoto Protocol even without US support. Other countries will soon follow. Kyoto will be implemented with or without the US. If the US is left out, leadership in clean energy technologies will migrate to other countries.

One hundred and fifty years ago, horse-drawn carriages were replaced by the locomotive as the main form of transportation. Those companies that failed to adapt vanished. We are now at the end of the Age of Fossil Fuels. New energy sources will increasingly drive the 21st century and offer large new business opportunities for those ready to meet the challenge. I urge you to take a stand now and support the Kyoto Protocol.

I await your response. Please do not send me information on your general commitment to the environment or on how generally concerned you are about climate change. There is only one question I want answered: do you support or oppose the Kyoto Protocol?

Sincerely,

(I used my legal name & address, of course)
