Color symbology
is an important aspect of Buddhism. Worshippers visualize deities in
specific colors to connect with the nature and functions of the deity.
Tara is first and foremost emerald-green. In the Buddhist system of
elements, green represents the air. Tara in Her green form is related
to wind, particularly in its ability to create movement. This color
signifies Her ability to act swiftly and without delay to bring protection
and other benefits to sentient beings. Plant life and the forest are
also associated with Tara's greenness. In one story of Her, She appears
dressed in leaves to save a forest-dweller from being devoured by a
lion. Taras of other colors are considered to be manifestations of Green
Tara.
"Some
have a vision of you as red as the sun with rays more brilliant and
red than the lac and the vermilion. Others see you blue like the sapphire.
Some again see you whiter than the milk churned out of the milky ocean.
Still others see you golden." (NitinG.)
