Tara, a fierce and loving protector and defender of all beings, works with each waking breath, to protect us. In many stories She appears miraculously to rescue Her devotees from the (sometimes literal) jaws of death. Indeed, one of Her names is "Cheater of Death." Long life is one of the primary blessings Tara bestows, especially in Her White Tara emanation. In monastic traditions, rituals introducing novices to Tara practices are called the "initiation into life."(Kinsley) Images of Tara, carved on rock walls in Tibet, are said to be "among the most potent protections for an individual, a dwelling, or an entire district."
