In ancient India, Tara was the guide and protectress of travelers. Literally, She was the pole star . Most monks and others made pilgrimmages to holy places, all of which were in areas difficult to get to -- remote mountains, forests and deserts. In addition to these travelers, merchants and traders also relied on Her, and it was their travels to other parts of Asia that helped spread Her popularity, especially with the Tibetan nomadic lifestyle and merchant activities.
