The current backlash against Goddess religion challenges Goddess scholars to support the claims of our movement, such as the one above. Making inferences about early historic and prehistoric culture is difficult, but necessary, business. "Prehistory" refers to the 145,000 years or so before writing was invented, or 96% of the experience of our species. The earliest extant "historic" documents are 4,000 years old--hymns written to the goddess Inanna by the Sumerian priestess Enheduanna. These poems and the Indian Vedas, written about 3,400 years ago, indicate the sophistication of human language and religious thought at the dawn of human "history." Fortunately, linguistic, anthropological, archaeological, and DNA records of our ancestors help us understand prehistory. Take, for example, the word "Om"....
