In his address in November [2004]... he told his audience that Hitler saw himself as "the instrument of providence" and fused his "racial dogma with a Germanic Christianity." "Some people recognized the moral perils of mixing religion and politics," he said of prewar Germany, "but many more were seduced by it. It was the pseudo-religious transfiguration of politics that largely ensured (Hitler's) success, notably in Protestant areas." |

Last Lines: A strong wind blew from the north all day, the choppy whitecaps on the lake a sure sign that it would soon be time for moving on. Tirag pulled the woven wool out of his pack and spread it over his back and shoulders. He ate a breakfast of leftover hash and thought about the days ahead. He and the boys had bags ready for the sedge grasses they’d collect on the trail. Their store of grains was packed; they had dried fish aplenty, and his quiver was full of arrows. When they passed through the lowland forests, they would set up temporary camps to harvest the fallen butternuts and hazelnuts, and all along the trail they’d make temporary stops to uproot the tubers that flavored their winter meals. Onced camped, pine seed and small game would round out their winter fare, and if the women were well stocked and generous, they might pick up some dried fruit at the Winter Trade. Tirag fed his fire and through a skin around his shoulders. He wondered what the boys were up to on this windy day and thought about winter camp. He intended to claim one of the men’s shelters this year and keep the boys with him. Tin and Dreep had been constant companions and helpers in his work in the Valley of Grasses, and their loyalty offerings, made on the night of the Great Games, had been substantial. He had proved his strength and skills at the Games, and with the boys at his side, he was confident that he could take and hold one of the established tree shelters. His years of living with the pack of boys were behind him. |
