cosmology, consciousness, contrariness: down-to-earth musings of a goddess mystic
In the spirit of imitation as the most sincere form of flattery, the inspiration for this little series of word cartoons came from Via Negativa's Words on the Street.
These short word "pictures," posted at the dark and full moon phases (and occasional other occasions), are an amusement I indulge in -- little jokes made in the spirit of armchair mysticism about the dance between "ancient pagan religions" and neopagan Paganism.
(A) famous phrase puts the case precisely: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." If asked, nine readers out of ten would recite the line as I've transcribed it. But they would be wrong. The actual quotation, according to Bartlett--who got it right--comes from a book of aphorisms called Lacon, by Charles Caleb Colton (1780-1832). The line he wrote and none of us remember is "Imitation is the sincerest of flattery." Colton himself makes no mention of form. (Harper's Magazine, In Praise of Imitation....)
